List of CAT tools

CAT stands for computer-assisted translation. With CAT tools, translators can now perform their tasks more efficiently and manage projects more effectively. The CAT system divides long texts into segments (paragraphs and sentences), which are then stored in a database. Translation memory refers to the ability to reuse previously translated content at any time.

We, at Reutrans, carry out all the translations manually; however, we take the help of some CAT tools from time to time to provide optimum translation services to our clients. Below is a list of some of the CAT tools we use.

TRANSLATION MEMORY SOFTWARE

The most famous CAT program is the translation memory program. It is used to divide the translated text into “segments.” When the linguist completes the translation, the program stores the text in a database of previously translated parts.

LANGUAGE SEARCH-ENGINE SOFTWARE

Language search engines work in a similar way to standard search engines, except that they retrieve results from a huge database of translation memories rather than from the Internet. The idea is to find fragments of previously translated texts that correspond to new sources for translation in such banks.

TERMINOLOGY MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE

When translators use management software, they can search the database for terms and automatically find them in new documents. Some of these programs allow translators to use a variety of features to add new word pairs that match and validate text in a database. Translators then ensure that those terms are translated correctly and consistently throughout the file.

ALIGNMENT SOFTWARE

Text alignment software allows translators to create translation using the same text as the original and target. This type of software separates the two texts and checks if the segments match. The results of the procedure can be stored in a translation memory program for later use.

INTERACTIVE MACHINE TRANSLATION

It is like the messaging application on your phone. This program attempts to predict how a word will be translated by the translator.
